Anti-spam feature in our Lead Forms - a honeypot field
This article will walk you through how to use our new anti-spam feature in Lead Forms: the honeypot field. This simple yet powerful tool helps block unwanted spam leads by adding an invisible field that bots are likely to fill, but genuine users will never see.
Step-by-Step Instructions
a. Lead Forms
Navigate to the lead form's Form Settings.
1. Scroll to the ANTI-SPAM section.
2. Toggle the option on to insert the field into the form (it is disabled by default). Note: the field will remain hidden from users via CSS.
3. The only optional setting is the Honeypot Field Name. By default, this will display as “city,” but you can change it if needed. Choose something natural, such as “site” or “referral.” Do not use names like “honeypot,” as this could alert spammers.
4. When working with a custom form, you'll need to add Honeypot as one of the available fields. The field will also have the option to edit the Field Name and enable Label which might further attract spam bots to fill out this field:
5. Once enabled, Save your changes. The field will now flag any submission that fills it in as spam.
b. Find Your Neighborhood
The honeypot field is built into this form and also includes the option to enable reCAPTCHA for extra protection.
In the editor, go to the Content tab at the top.
a. Scroll to the ANTI-SPAM section.
b. Toggle the Honeypot option on. In the same section, you may also enable reCAPTCHA for an additional layer of protection.
c. The only editable option is the Field Name. By default, it is “city,” but again, you can change it to something natural, such as “website” or “referral.” Avoid names like “honeypot,” which can reveal its purpose to spammers.
d. Don’t forget to Save your changes. The field will then flag any submission that fills it in as spam.
Additional Notes
a. What It Does
Please note that spam leads are accepted, but they will be marked as spam. These leads will appear in your Lead Manager, but:
1. They are hidden by default.
2. They are not forwarded to your CRM, preventing spam floods.
3. The field is invisible to real users, so it does not affect genuine submissions.
b. What to Expect
The Honeypot field is very effective, but not a complete solution. Some advanced bots may bypass it by fully rendering the page, but this requires more resources, so you should still notice a significant reduction in spam. If a few spam leads slip through, don’t worry. Over time, they should be much less frequent.
